Pied Piper's Owner Tells the Story of the Stud

Hi my name is Karyn McLachlan. I live in the small town of Otaki and am the proud owner of “Pied Piper Pony Stud”.  I have been very  involved with horses since I was a child, enjoying and contributing to our local Pony Club, gymkhanas, ribbon days & competed at ODE’s.  I returned to riding as an adult and joined the Kapiti Riding Club with my TB.  My daughter soon followed in my footsteps along with my youngest son. I am currently still involved with the Otaki Pony Club to the present day as Vice-President.

We purchased our first harness pony, a miniature by the name of “Rusty” from the South Island.   Rusty is one of the most honest and trustworthy wee horses I have ever had the good fortune of owning and he is worth his weight in gold.  He has worked in partnership with , my son, close friends and I to compete confidently  in harness based competition. We have since also purchased a lovely wee welsh mare called “Pebbles” who I competed  in formal  competitions this season with some great results.

I purchased my first breeding Welsh mare (Rosie) and her colt foal (Dude) from the Wairarapa in 2007. Dude was gelded and then broken in to ride with the intention of putting him into harness as a 4yr old, he was leased out to a lovely wee girl who just adored him.

I was offered the lease of a part-bred welsh stallion ( ziggy ) and bred my first foals by him last season.  I then went on to purchase my current Perlino Stallion “My Moonlight Shadow” and am eagerly waiting my first foals this season.  Chuckles has served mares this season, who have ranged in height from 10.2hh upto 15.1hh.

Welsh Stallion “TY Gwyn Austin Powers” has just joined my family on lease and will be available for stud purposes this season to limited outside mares.

Sadly due to a decision to  change  direction, It is necessary to  reduce the  number of miniatures included in the stud inventory. I currently have the use of 28acres, and have the room now to expand to larger ponies.

My aim is to produce the ultimate child’s riding pony that not only possess awesome temperaments & conformation, but will suit most disciplines and are generally a sound & trustworthy pony.
